Kirby has been playing music of all styles for over 30 years on various instruments: the electric and acoustic guitar, solo and with ensembles; electric and acoustic bass, with groups as varied as symphony orchestras, piano jazz trios, country-western bands, rhythm-and-blues groups, ethnic groups (Italian, Greek, Irish) etc.; also the viola da gamba.

Kirby's main focus of interest presently is playing solo guitar and solo viola da gamba with a sequencer (a hardware computer synthesizer which plays MIDI files).

Kirby has a BA degree in music and an adult education teaching credential, currently teaching music in two school districts. He is a member of the Musician's Union, Local 153, as well as the Teacher's Union (NEA, CTA, HEA). In addition, Kirby belongs to ASTA (American String Teacher's Association), SFEMS (San Francisco Early Music Society), VdGSA (Viola da Gamba Society of America), and others.

Some of the groups Kirby has played with include the Berkeley Symphony, the Pacific Philharmonic, principal bass with Alameda Co. CETA Symphony, Los Sospiro, and many others. Kirby has also served as Personnel Manager of the Santa Cruz County Symphony and Music Librarian for the Cabrillo Music Festival. Some of the popular music groups Kirby has belonged to, include: SouthWest Connection (country western), the Sounds (rhythm and blues), the Yak-Tones (50's Oldies dance music), Shanachie (Irish folk group), Kymata (Greek dance and concert band), and many others, as well as big bands, pit orchestras for shows, musicals, etc.

Kirby has performed with some of these groups at Davies Symphony Hall, Herbst Theatre (SF), Masonic Auditorium (SF), Concord Pavilion, Flint Center, as well as various saloons, honky-tonks, street fairs, night clubs and supper clubs.
